PURPOSE:
With assistance provided by the DuPage Regional Office of Education, Directions is a collaborative program between Glenbard High School District 87 and DuPage High School District 88.
The supplemental program provides academic and remedial course work, opportunities for career exploration, counseling, and transition services for at-risk freshmen and sophomore students enrolled in one of the two high school districts participating in the program. Directions aims to positively impact attendance, behavior, and academic achievement of those attending. The programās mission is to work with students as they learn to make positive educational decisions and personal choices.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Directions' candidate exhibits one or more of the following:
- Behind in earned credits and/or state standards
- Minimal behavior that may interfere with academic success
- Reading and/or math scores below grade level
- āAt riskā in terms of achieving success (social/emotional factors)
- Problem solving and decision making skills that need development
STUDENT INTAKE PROCESS
Students are referred to Directions by their home school teachers, counselors, social workers, deans, and other student personnel services. Each district is afforded a certain number of slots and recommendations are made. Candidates are then selected by Directions, interviewed, and determination for placement is made. Students and families are asked to commit to a minimum of one semester. Subsequent meetings will be held to determine if student remains in the program, or if they are to return to their home schools.
PROGRAM COMPONENTS:
- Enrollment open to 60 at-risk freshmen and sophomores
- Personalized educational plan and goals for each student
- Curriculum aligned to state standards
- Full day of classes
- Development of problem solving, anger management and interpersonal skills
- Six teachers in core subject areas
- Remediation of skills with an emphasis in the areas of reading and math
- Small class sizes
- Part-time Social Worker available for group/individual sessions

Changes For 2012-13:
The Directions Program will be offering credit recovery opportunities and college/career preparation to Glenbard High School seniors (and juniors if space available). Earning a high school diploma leads to college, career options and better choices after high school.
Students can be recommended for the Directions Program by their Glenbard serving school. Parent consent is required prior to a student being considered. Students admitted in the program will develop a Student Success Plan to identify strengths, interests and goals.
Students will be given opportunities for traditional instruction, credit recovery and coursework through Technology Center of DuPage (TCD). Schedules vary depending on student interest, credit needs and openings in TCD courses.
Students are expected to:
- Attend regularly
- Complete all coursework
- Actively participate in planning for coursework and future goals
- Conduct themselves in accordance with District 87 and TCD behavioral expectations
- Collaborate with staff to improve skills and achieve individual goals
