February is Black History Month, an annual observance dedicated to honoring the triumphs and great contributions of African Americans throughout U.S. history. It serves as a powerful reminder that Black history is American history, Black culture is American culture, and Black stories are essential to the ongoing story of America.
The roots of Black History Month go back nearly 100 years ago to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. An author and historian, Dr. Woodson created a weeklong celebration of Black history in 1926. He chose the second week of February to correspond with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Dr. Woodson was also the founder of what is now known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).
Black History Month was formally recognized nationally by President Gerald Ford in 1976.
