Emotions like sadness, fear, anger, confusion or stress are normal. All emotions tell us something about ourselves and our situation, even so-called negative feelings. The key in adolescence is learning to manage a full range of emotions, and families can help.

Self-regulation is a skill that can be taught and practiced to tame outbursts and impulsive or inappropriate behavior. The goal is not to avoid hard situations. Instead, families can coach young people through tough circumstances and help them learn to tolerate life’s stressors. Ramirez will share strategies that work to build strong family relationships and help children ride the waves of emotions.

Ramírez coordinates programs for families in Chicago and various Illinois school districts and is the author of 10 mental health publications. He is president of the Family First Organization and has extensive experience in clinical psychology, couples therapy and family counseling.

GPS is generously sponsored by the Emmy Gaffey Foundation, Cebrin Goodman Center, Prevention Leadership Team of the DuPage County Health Department, Duly Health and Care, Glenbard Early Childhood Collaborative, Cooperative Association for Special Education (CASE), College of DuPage, KidsMatter, Endeavor Health, Community Consolidated School District 93 Birth to 5 Coalition, DuPage Regional Office of Education, and Webb-Hutter Family Fund of DuPage Foundation.

North Theatre to present “The Learned Ladies”
Glenbard North Theatre will present its fall mainstage production, “The Learned Ladies,” November 21-23.

As stated in a synopsis from Dramatists Play Service, “Clitandre seeks the hand of Henriette, a match heartily approved of by her father, Chrysale. However, his wife, Philaminte, has other plans for her younger daughter—namely marriage to Trissotin, a foppish wit who panders to Philaminte’s intellectual pretensions. Further complications are introduced by Armande, Henriette’s older sister, who once rejected Clitandre but now resents his attentions to Henriette; by Bélise, Chrysale’s sister, who believes (erroneously) that all men are wildly in love with her; and by Vadius, a scholar jealous of Trissotin’s hold on Philaminte. Needless to say, the course of true love does not run smoothly, as the pseudo-intellectual posturings of Philaminte and her coterie clash with the struggle between Chrysale and Philaminte over who shall ordain the disposition of their daughter’s hand. But happily, and thanks to the maneuvering of Chrysale’s brother, Ariste, all is set right in the end, with hypocrisy exposed and true love made triumphant.”
