From September 15 through October 15, our Glenbard high schools are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Across our campuses, students and staff are honoring the rich traditions, histories, and contributions of our Hispanic and Latinx communities through a vibrant lineup of events and activities.
At Glenbard North, the festivities kicked off with a Hispanic Heritage Month Spirit Week from Sept. 21-25. The daily themes include Loteria Day, Jersey Day, College Day, Flag Day, and Orgullo Day (wear HHM or Glenbard North shirt). HHM t-shirts are available for purchase during all lunch periods this week.
Additionally, the Organization for Latin American Students (O.L.A.S.) is sponsoring a Picnic & Paletas event during lunch periods on Sept. 23, featuring games and snacks for students. Paletas are frozen dessert treats made from fresh fruits and cream.
On Sept. 25, North will have a Hispanic heritage-themed lunch line with fajitas, tacos, nachos, rice and beans, as well as Música Viernes (Friday Music) throughout the building.
Friendly competition will occur on Oct. 6 during the Staff vs. Students soccer game. The matchup will take place during the halftime of the varsity soccer game, which begins at 6:30 p.m.
Latinos Unidos will be sponsoring a number of building activities at Glenbard South during the next month. The student group is decorating the Equity Wall to celebrate the accomplishments of Hispanic people throughout history, with additional decoration opportunities in the school hallways starting on Sept. 28, and on the Spirit (Chalk) Wall during the first week of October. Latinos Unidos will be setting up an ofrenda display for the upcoming Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. Día de los Muertos is a traditional fiesta held in honor of deceased loved ones and is celebrated on Nov. 1-2 in Mexico and other regions of Latin America.
Hispanic heritage trivia and paleta giveaway is scheduled for Oct. 13 during lunch periods, providing students with a sweet treat as well as an opportunity to learn fun facts about HHM.
Music from various Latin American nations is being played during passing periods, and staff spotlights on the hallway TV displays highlight their favorite cultural traditions.
HHM activities at Glenbard East began with the library hosting a papel picado event during lunch periods on Sept. 17. Papel picado is a traditional Mexican craft featuring colorful tissue paper sheets with intricate cut-out details.
Spirit Week is scheduled for Sept. 28-Oct. 2, and all students and staff are invited to participate in the themed dress-up days. The themes will be Jersey Day, Latino Icon Day, Heritage Day, Familia Day (coordinate matching outfits), and Western Day. Additionally, Latinos Unidos will be running a churros fundraiser sale on the mornings of Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
Throughout the recognition month, East will be highlighting students and staff on school TV displays to celebrate their culture, stories, and pride in their heritage. “Did You Know?” announcements over the public address system will provide facts and trivia, and Fridays will feature music during passing periods. The hallway display case will also be decorated as a Hispanic Heritage Month display.
Glenbard West is honoring Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of lunchtime cultural events. On Sept. 21, students enjoyed fresh paletas for a refreshing break during the day. Lunchtime dance lessons will be the highlight on Sept. 30, as the library will transform into a lively dance floor featuring guided instruction in popular Latin dance styles. Students of all skill levels are invited to step up, learn new moves, and celebrate rhythm and movement together.
A Hispanic heritage culminating celebration is scheduled for Oct. 9. West will partner with the Glenbard Latino Organization (GLO) student group for an interactive lunch event featuring refreshing aguas frescas, friendly games of lotería and dominoes, and hands-on crafting stations for papel picado and flores de papel (paper flowers).
Members of La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society) are decorating one of the display cases by the cafe for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in mid-October.
The Directions program is hosting an HHM Spirit Week on Sept. 21-25 with themed days designed to engage students and celebrate Hispanic culture, heritage, and identity. Students enjoyed delicious paletas during fourth and fifth periods on Sept. 18 as well.
Directions will put on a taco celebration for students on Oct. 7, and will conclude HHM on Oct. 15 with games of lotería accompanied by Hispanic candy.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is a great opportunity for our students to celebrate their culture, learn from one another, and recognize the traditions and contributions that make our school community so special,” said Directions Principal Labrina Bone. “We want our students to feel proud of who they are and know that their culture and identity matter.”
