What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you personally?

To me, Hispanic Heritage Month means giving credit where credit is due. To value, recognize, and honor a culture that is so rich and has made a tremendous contribution to our everyday lives.

What are some aspects of Hispanic history or culture that you think more people should learn about?

Hispanic culture has a very deep-rooted sense of collectivism – it gives people a purpose within a community. I think more people should immerse themselves in it because it makes you feel part of something bigger than yourself.

Who are some Hispanic figures (historical or contemporary) that you look up to or find inspiring?

A specific figure I look up to is Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. She is an inspiration by being the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, rising to new heights for Hispanics.

Do you have a specific family tradition that holds special meaning?

My specific family tradition is as simple as devoting some hours of my day religiously to get together with my family and watch the show we are currently on. It might not be extremely unique, but it’s a tradition we have kept up since I was very young. And I know many Hispanic families do the same.

What groups and activities are you involved with in your school community?

I’m involved in our Equity Club, which helps make school a place welcoming to every student. I’m also part of our Mock Trial Club, Speech Club, and I play badminton and golf.

What is your favorite class that you’ve taken in high school?

My favorite class was American Law. It taught me a lot about the empowerment of citizens by being aware of their rights.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you personally?

To me, Hispanic Heritage Month means that it’s an opportunity to not only learn more about and connect with my Mexican heritage, but to also celebrate the day that Mexico achieved independence with my family and the Hispanic community in Chicago.

What are some aspects of Hispanic history or culture that you think more people should learn about?

I think that people should learn more about the Hispanic and Latino influence on North American geography, culture, and the Chicano Movement.

Who are some Hispanic figures (historical or contemporary) that you look up to or find inspiring?

A notable Hispanic figure that I look up to and find inspiring is Sergio Juarez Correa.

Do you have a specific family tradition that holds special meaning?

During Hispanic Heritage Month, my family’s tradition is to always go to Chicago to support Hispanic businesses and to enjoy the festivities not only for Mexican Independence Day, but also to celebrate other Hispanic countries that achieved their independence soon after Mexico did.

What groups and activities are you involved with in your school community?

I am currently mainly involved in the Spanish Honors Society.

What is your favorite class that you’ve taken in high school?

My favorite class that I’ve taken in high school would be AP Spanish Language.
