What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you personally?

Personally, Hispanic Heritage Month is a way to share and celebrate my culture with everyone! It allows me to show how enjoyable and unique my culture is through dance, music, and food. I feel I can express my love for my culture without feeling alone or like an outsider.

What are some aspects of Hispanic history or culture that you think more people should learn about?
There are many aspects of Hispanic history and culture that I think everyone should learn about. Our diversity is outstanding! Many Hispanic people come from different backgrounds and countries, all with their own unique traditions and style, yet we can all relate to each other. Another aspect of Hispanic culture I think we should all learn about is our history! Our indigenous roots connect us all the way back to early civilizations such as the Aztecs, Mayan, Inca, and Taíno.

Who are some Hispanic figures (historical or contemporary) that you look up to or find inspiring?
I personally find almost all Hispanic artists and influencers inspiring, because they are someone to look up to. Specifically, Benito Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny) is someone I find extremely inspiring. He is a Puerto Rican artist who has been playing in my household since I was a little kid. Benito is someone who has stayed true to the values of always being proud of your culture and being yourself. He has used his influence to bring attention and support to his community, while also spreading and popularizing Hispanic culture around the world.

Do you have a specific family tradition that holds special meaning?
Some specific family traditions that I love in particular are New Year’s Eve grapes and playing lotería. Every year on New Year’s Eve at midnight, we have to finish 12 grapes and make 12 wishes quickly. I love this tradition because it gives something to look forward to in the new year and is believed to bring good luck. Additionally, the game lotería (known as Mexican bingo) is a game we have always played at all family gatherings. It is something that has always brought us together and is playable by all, no matter their age. I love these traditions because they are really enjoyable and memorable!

What groups and activities are you involved with in your school community?
At Glenbard North, I am involved in the OLAS dance team (Organization for Latin American Students), BSA (Black Student Association), and Marching Band. All of which are very fun and great ways to be involved in our school community and events.

What is your favorite class that you’ve taken in high school?
So far as a sophomore in high school, my favorite class to take is Debate. Debate class is a very entertaining and hands-on class where you’re able to share your opinions, have a more direct choice in making your projects, and learn in a more fun way.
