Superintendent message re: tragedy at Texas school

Dear faculty, staff, students and families,

Like you, I am heartbroken about the loss of lives at an elementary school in Uvalde, TX. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends who are coping with the devastating loss. Sadly, the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas is only the latest in a series of such violence.

In D87, we are committed to providing a welcoming, safe learning environment for every student. Our faculty and staff are intentional in their work to engage with students and meet the social emotional needs of each student. We provide social emotional supports that include:

  • Knowledgeable, supportive school staff (counselors, social workers, psychologist)
  • Referrals to mental health services and counseling services in the community
  • Promoting healthy relationship skills, responsible decision making and self-awareness skills
  • Wellness programs
  • Mentoring programs for students
  • Helplines for bullying prevention, crisis assistance and anonymous tips.

The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. We remain vigilant and have procedures and protocols in building systems that ensure proactive measures.

We work closely with local fire departments and law enforcement to prepare for emergencies and practice our safety procedures with students and staff. We continue to research best systems and practices for campus safety.

We maintain a comprehensive crisis plan, which addresses a variety of emergency situations. Precautions and safety measures include but are not limited to:

  • Behavioral assessments
  • Working closely with local law enforcement
  • Coordinating with our Prudential security team for effective supervision of each campus
  • Requiring all visitors to check in with security
  • Adhering to all state and federal guidelines for school safety.

The expression “see something, say something” continues to be critically important. If students or adults know about a threat of violence or other danger, it’s critical that they tell a trusted adult, including local law enforcement. Our students, staff and families have been vigilant in reporting concerns and we appreciate the information and communication as we all work together to support school safety.
