Board Highlights feature a brief description of the action items and discussion items on the meeting agenda. Board Highlights do not replace minutes. The minutes are approved by the Board and posted after the next regularly scheduled Board meeting. Present: Tod Altenburg, Jay Bastian, Margaret DeLaRosa, Hetal Lee, Martha Mueller, Pete Nolan and Jim Shannon.
1.) Congratulations to Glenbard West on winning the IHSA Boys Volleyball State Championship on June 6th. The Hilltoppers finished the season with a 40-2 record and claimed their sixth state championship in the past 11 seasons. Congratulations to our players, coaches, and the entire Hilltopper community on an incredible season. The team includes the following students: Luke Bachman, Nolan Beery, Jack Belda, Tommy Clifford, Vaughn Crews, Matt Cristiano, Christian Cudzilo, Andrew Fanella, Cole Fournier, Ian Hoster, JJ Iarrobino, Kole Johnson, Saipower Kyaw, Carter Long, Brendan Markey, Jaipreet Singh, Lukas Wallin, Daniel Weinberg, Otis Yahn, Granger Becket, Noah Callaway, and Ethan Legel. Head coach is Christine Giunta-Mayer.
2.) Congratulations to the Glenbard West boys lacrosse team for taking fourth place at the IHSA state final on June 4-6. The Hilltoppers finished the season with a 20-6 record. The team includes the following students: Myer Allman, Joey Beiermeister, Ivan Blood, Vincent Blood, Jack Boland, Oakley Braskich, Grady Brennan, Luke Brennan, Nicholas Chester, Connor Clark, Jack Davis, Isaac Disimile, Elliot Dupuy, Andrew Engel, Julian Fornaro, Spencer Freeman, Griffin Glascott, Joaquin Grimaldo, Zach Hane, William Hoisington, Maddox Keller, Nick Kirincic, Chase Lloyd, Ben Loughlin, Ike Martin, Jacob Quintos, Cole Roscich, Scott Segebarth, Johnny Smith, Beau Wellen, Carter Wilhite, Luca Wisniewski, and Nile Woods. Head coach is Eric Nuss.
3.) Athletics are an important part of a comprehensive education. When our students participate in athletics and other extracurricular activities, they develop a sense of belonging, along with leadership, collaboration and communication skills. We are partnering with the Glen Ellyn, Carol Stream and Lombard park districts to present a variety of sports camps this summer. Details are at csparks.org, gepark.org and lombardparks.com.
4.) Summer school is off to a great start with over 1,500 enrollments across get ahead credit classes, credit recovery classes, and bridge courses, with more students enrolled in multilingual language courses and extended school year. Credit recovery enrollment is consistent with enrollment from Summer 2025. We’ve seen a decrease in get-ahead enrollment from 294 last summer to 238 this summer, which was expected because of a prerequisite change for our Speech course. Bridge enrollment is also down from last year, from 944 students to 750 students this year.
5.) Some students with special needs require extended school year support due to regression during school breaks. Dawn Langdon leads ESY every year. This summer, ESY will be held from June 4th – July 16th. There are currently 106 students registered to attend this year at Glenbard West, North, Northern Transition, and the Southern Transition Site. We have 13 teachers (6 of which are current Glenbard employees and 10 returning this year) and 26 aides. Staff are planning great opportunities for students to continue building their reading and math skills, as well as develop budgeting, shopping, and cooking skills. Community trips will also give students opportunities to learn how to navigate their community and give back by volunteering with Meals on Wheels.
6.) Glenbard is partnering with KidsMatter and College of DuPage to offer students a summer Survey of Healthcare Careers experience focused on mental health and behavioral health career exploration. The program is offered at no cost to Glenbard students, with expenses paid through a grant from the Milton Township Community Mental Health Board. Students will enroll in COD’s HLTHS 1100 course and have the opportunity to earn college credit, complete a Teen Mental Health certification, hear from healthcare and behavioral health guest speakers, and participate in field experiences. Field experiences and speakers include partners such as Endeavor Health, Edward-Elmhurst Health, Linden Oaks Behavioral Health, and other mental health and behavioral health organizations. This opportunity supports students interested in healthcare, psychology, social work, counseling, behavioral health, and related human services fields.
7.) Ayden Diaz, a current Glenbard North student, is participating in Gilbane’s paid summer internship program and is assigned to the Glenbard East jobsite. Ayden is part of a cohort of 20 high school and college-level interns and is receiving the same internship experience as the college students, including daily jobsite experience, weekly field experiences, trade partner visits, workshops, and final presentations. Glenbard West alumna Malena Brosdal is also participating in the program and supporting the Glenbard West jobsite. This partnership provides students with authentic exposure to construction management, skilled trades, engineering, project coordination, and related career pathways.
8.) Graduation ceremonies for all four Glenbard high schools were successfully held in May, celebrating the accomplishments of the Class of 2026. Family members, friends, staff, and community members joined us in honoring our graduates as they reached this important milestone. The events ran smoothly and reflected the pride, traditions, and spirit of each Glenbard school community.
To highlight these memorable celebrations and the achievements of our graduates, we would like to share a graduation recap video featuring moments from each of the four commencement ceremonies. A Look Back at Graduation Across Glenbard D87 Class 2026

– accepting the following donations: Vito and Stephanie Della Pollo, $3,000.00 to the Hitters football program at West. Hollie Murrin, $500.00 for supplies at Transition South.
– four excursions.
– Title I parent and family engagement. As required by Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Grants Administration, Glenbard must develop a plan to address Parent and Family Engagement through the Title I grant. This plan must be board approved and submitted to ISBE prior to the start of the 26-27 school year.
– athletic trainer contract renewal. District 87 has utilized Athletico to provide athletic training services for our athletic programs. Our assistant principals for athletics have been very satisfied with their services.
The district currently contracts for two trainers each at West, South and North, with one trainer at East. East and West have one employee staff member that is a certified trainer that provides this function. Therefore, all of our sites have at least two trainers on hand to support our programs.
Athletico approached the district last month expressing a desire to extend the contract, but also expressing their inability to do so without an increase well above the cost of inflation. Our prior three-year contract increases of 4 percent failed to keep up with the costs necessary to staff these services. In essence, Athletico has reported that they have been operating at a deficit this past year.
Given the great partnership, we feel it is best to secure an additional long-term contract despite the larger-than-typical increases. The market indicates that we would likely not see a better value from another vendor. Our current contract is $280,000 annually, plus the hourly cost of summer school trainer services. Athletico has indicated that they will require an increase in the hourly rate from $25 to $45 as part of the renewal. We would recommend no other changes to the agreement other than the cost increases, which include a total estimated annual contract cost of $314,000 for 2026-27, $331,000 for 2027-28 and $344,000 for 2028-29.
– Joint Annual Conference – IASB/IASA/IASBO registration. This coming November marks 93 years of leadership and learning with school leaders from throughout Illinois at the 2026 Joint Annual Conference. Attendees can hear from inspirational school advocates and learn new ideas and best practices focusing on school governance. The annual conference offers multiple opportunities for professional and personal development, and networking with school officials from across the state. Recognized as one of the nation’s largest state education conferences, the conference is a premier training event for school board members, administrators, school administrative professionals and business officials.
The 2026 Joint Annual Conference IASB-IASA-IASBO will be held in Chicago on November 20-22, 2026. Our district office leaders, administrative staff and Board members plan to attend the conference and pre-conference workshops. Additionally, reservations for lodging have been made for our attending Board of Education members Jay Bastian, Hetal Lee, Martha Mueller, Pete Nolan and Jim Shannon. The room deposit is $200 each.
– distinguished service award.
In grateful recognition of a meaningful 18-year career, Glenbard District 87 honors Donna Gastel for her unwavering commitment, exceptional hard work, and profound kindness. Since joining the district in January 2008, her journey began as a substitute and a computer lab aid, followed by key transitions to supporting the AV Director at Glenbard West, serving as Administrative Assistant in Human Resources, and ultimately rising to the executive role of Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent and Board Secretary in 2019 through 2026.
Throughout her tenure, Donna has distinguished herself as a remarkably detail-oriented and thoughtful professional. Her colleagues know her as a creative and innovative problem-solver who navigated complex administrative landscapes with poise and precision. Whether managing meticulous board governance documentation or spearheading district-wide communications, Donna approached every challenge with an analytical mind and an inventive spirit, ensuring operational excellence across all departments.
Donna’s steady hand and deep institutional knowledge proved indispensable during critical periods of leadership transition. She successfully supported an outgoing Superintendent, managing the intense complexities of the superintendent search process, and facilitating a flawless transition for the arrival of new leadership. She performed these tasks with an innate grace and care that provided stability and confidence for the Board of Education and all Stakeholders.
As she transitions into a well-deserved retirement, we express our profound gratitude for the standard of excellence, care, and dedication she has provided to our community for nearly two decades.

– postsecondary matriculation report. This report provided an overview of Glenbard student data on a variety of postsecondary metrics, including postsecondary plans, career goals, persistence, four-year college graduation rate, and summer melt. All of our schools are aligned to the Illinois PaCE Framework, which is organized around the areas of career exploration and development, postsecondary education exploration, preparation and selection, and financial aid and literacy. This serves as the foundation for our postsecondary and pathways initiatives to ensure that students have the most comprehensive college and career planning available. We believe these strategies will continue to ensure that we increase the postsecondary preparedness and success of all of our students.
– District 87 serious safety pedestrian hazard zones. The Board of Education engaged TYLin (formerly Sam Schwartz Engineering) to conduct an inventory and assessment of existing pedestrian conditions within a 1.5-mile radius of each school, encompassing all designated student walk zones. Given that the previous study was completed in 2018 and considering the numerous completed and ongoing construction projects in areas surrounding our schools, an updated evaluation was warranted.
The purpose of the study was to review existing conditions and determine whether student walk zones continue to meet safety expectations and align with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) criteria for Serious Safety Hazard Zones. TYLin’s analysis included a comprehensive review of pedestrian routes and potential hazards based on IDOT standards, including: Type I Hazard – Walking Along a Roadway; Type II Hazard – Walking on a Roadway; Type III Hazard – Crossing a Roadway; Type IV Hazard – Crossing Railroad Tracks.
TYLin summarized its findings and recommendations based on these established criteria and current site conditions. The results of the study were presented to the Boar for review and consideration. Following Board review, all applicable Serious Safety Hazard Zone applications will be submitted to and approved by IDOT.
– amendment to intergovernmental agreement with Glen Ellyn Park District. In 2022, the Board of Education approved a long-term extension to the intergovernmental agreement with the Glen Ellyn Park District. The existing cooperative agreement contemplated how each entity is granted access to each other’s facilities and/or fields for various programs throughout the year.
Recently, we discovered that a separate agreement for reunification purposes specific to the Ackerman complex exists that needed to be renewed. Rather than continue with multiple agreements, we have worked with attorneys to include the amendment.
The Glen Ellyn Park District intends to take this for approval at their June 16, 2026 Board meeting.

– Freedom of Information Act requests. By School Code, a Board of Education is to be informed at its regular meeting of any requests made under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the status of the district’s response. Here are the recent FOIA requests to which the district has responded:
