Larson to retire in 2025; superintendent search begins

Superintendent David Larson, who has served Glenbard District 87 since 2012, will retire at the end of the 2024-25 school year. In preparation for Dr. Larson’s retirement in summer 2025, Board of Education members have begun the search for the next superintendent. The Board has hired BWP & Associates as the district’s search firm.

Superintendent Search Online Survey

The Glenbard District 87 Board of Education is interested in input about the desired qualities, experience and characteristics of the next superintendent. BWP & Associates developed an online survey about the next superintendent. The survey will be available from Sept. 9 to 21.

Glenbard families, students, staff and community members are invited to take the survey in the following languages:

Community Forum (Sept. 12, 2024)

BWP & Associates conducted a community forum on September 12th at 6:30 p.m. in the District 87 Administrative Center at 596 Crescent Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.  This was open to all members of the Glenbard 87 community as an in-person opportunity to provide input about the desired qualities, experience and characteristics of the next superintendent. A Zoom meeting was also available to attend the Sept. 12 community forum virtually.

Feedback from the forum will be included in a leadership profile that will be reported to the Board of Education when it meets at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 in the District 87 Administrative Center, 596 Crescent Blvd. in Glen Ellyn. 

Superintendent Search Timeline


June 17, 2024
= Approval of BWP & Associates to conduct the search

July 15 = Board and BWP team conduct planning meeting

July 22 = Networking begins

Early August = Vacancy notice approved and is posted on agreed-upon websites (BWP site, IASA Job Bank, IALAS, NABSE and AASA)

Early August = Application system goes live on Frontline

Late August = BWP conducts 1:1 Board interviews

Week of September 9 = Community engagement begins, including launch of online survey

September 12 = Stakeholder meetings and community forum

October 14 = Leadership profile is reviewed with Board

October 25 = Last day for applicants to apply

Weeks of October 28 & Nov 4 = BWP begins paper screening of applicants followed by interviews of candidates who best match profile

November 13 = Consultants conduct workshop with Board, present slate of candidates and prepare for first round interviews (*special meeting – closed session)

Week of November 18 = Board conducts first round of interviews

Week of December 2 = Board interviews finalists

December 16 = Contract with new superintendent approved
